Derbyshire v Lincolnshire

The second match for the U140 side was an away fixture against Derbyshire and was played at the Rolls Royce Club in Derby. Once again we were up against a stronger side and good performances would be needed if we were to have any chance of victory. As usual I focussed on my own board and missed most of the early action, but the first few games to finish indicated that we had got off to a decent start with early wins for Jules Brown and Chris Cumbers. There followed a long series of results, some draws but mostly wins for Derbyshire that saw them retake the lead, and with only John Grasham adding a further full point to the Lincolnshire score. By the time I resigned, there were only four boards still playing. Derbyshire still needed a win and a draw to secure victory, but Keith Noons, Mark Newstead, David Scott and Bill Egan were showing plenty of determination. Bill had the initiative in a major pieces endgame and soon secured a win, but Keith was eventually forced to concede in a knight and pawns endgame. David seemed to have a more difficult task in a rook and minor piece endgame and eventually had to agree to a draw. That left only Mark still playing, his opponent finally resigning shortly before the time expired, and leaving Lincolnshire on the losing side of an 8½-7½ score.
